Disney and Pixar has released the newest trailer for Inside Out 2. The highly anticipated sequel finds Riley’s first emotions Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira)
navigating the life of being a teenager whose life was turned upside
down then her parents decided to move from Minnesota to sunny
California.
Now that she is settled in, they find themselves in a new phase of Riley’s life, which also means a bunch of new emotions are going to join headquarters. As you can imagine, it is going to be quite cramped trying to fit Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) into one space.
Like all sequels, new characters are introduced to help progress the story and help with the character arcs. As such, Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment not only represent the new emotions any teenager experiences as they grow up, they also bring in new perspectives and add some tension to the original emotion team that felt they were running a smooth operation. So of course, these new emotions have different ideas on how Riley should react during certain situations.
The trailer does a great job reminding us about the job and resposnibilties of each emotion. Joy is supposed to be happy and optimistic, while that is balanced out with Sadness’ more pensive and empathetic nature. Fear’s main job is to protect Riley and keep her safe, while Disgust makes sure that Riley puts her own mouthguard in and not anyone elses. Meanwhile, Anger gives Riley the rage she needs to stay competitive during a hockey game.
The trailer also gives us a look at some of the new emotions as well. Anxiety, the previously announced new arrival is bound to shake up everything in headquarters and beyond. A bundle of frazzled energy. Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome.
Envy may be small but she sure knows what she wants. She’s perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to pine over it.
Ennui couldn’t care less. Bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, Ennui adds the perfect amount of teenage apathy to Riley’s personality, when she feels like it.
Embarassment likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.
Directed by Kelesy Mann, says “Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat,” said Mann. “That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds.”
Inside Out 2 opens in theaters on June 14, 2024.
