The Witcher's Freya Allan Teases Season 4's "Dark Turn" For Ciri

The Witcher star Freya Allen, who plays Princess Ciri, teases a “dark turn” for her character in season 4. First hitting Netflix in 2019, the adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy novels returned for season 3 in 2023, which served as Henry Cavill’s final season as Geralt of Rivia before Liam Hemsworth takes over the role for season 4. The Witcher season 3 ending set the stage for the recast by setting up new stories for Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt, Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri.

During a recent interview with Radio Times, Allen teased a “dark turn” for Ciri in The Witcher season 4. The actress says she is interested to see how her character’s journey is translated from the books to the screen and is excited “to take her through that journey“. Read her full comments below:

I’m honestly just intrigued how they’re going to translate that story from the books because it’s… for Ciri’s journey, it’s a very pivotal moment in her storyline, and takes quite a dark turn. I’ll be intrigued to see how they translate that to the TV version. But the prospect is exciting, to get to take her through that journey.

What To Expect From Ciri’s “Dark Turn” In The Witcher Season 4

Though Princess Ciri has consistently embodied virtuous qualities, her propensity towards darkness has always been apparent in Netflix’s Witcher show, and the season 3 ending only solidified her impending descent. The Netflix series explores the prophecy that states a descendant of Falka will bring about the destruction of the world, though an elf sorceress from Lara Dorren’s lineage can save it. It’s unclear which category Ciri falls into, though season 3 strongly suggests she is a descendant of Falka.

Ciri identifies herself as Falka when she is introduced to the Rats, which suggests she will bring about the world’s destruction, while the nature of the group also foreshadows Ciri’s ominous future. In the books, the bandit group acts as Robin Hood-like criminals, stealing from the rich to satisfy their own material desires, and they aren’t afraid to resort to violence and murder. As a member of the Rats, Ciri will travel down an increasingly dark path and explore new facets of her power and personality, which could be quite a controversial change for the previously compassionate character.

The Witcher season 4 is expected to release on Netflix in early 2025.
